Microbiology has been a part of wastewater treatment for centuries. Not all all aspects of biological treatment however has been fully understood of optimized. Advancement in this field have been relatively slow until the past half century. A keener understanding of the role bacteria plays in the breakdown of wastewater and the ability to maximize the efficiencies of this process has enabled the role of bacteria to reach increased efficiencies in the role that bacteria plays in this process.
