THE PROJECT

A leading Oleo chemical manufacturer with head quarters in Europe operates multiple production facilities world wide along with a full fledged wastewater treatment facility at their European production site. The plant is comprised of a chemical pre-treatment with dissolved air flotation unit followed by suspended growth biological reactor with lamella clarifier

THE PROBLEM

With a planned expansion of the production facility, the plant was anticipating the higher wastewater flows requiring effluent treatment could be achieved within the existing infrastructure due to space restrictions. After the full expansion was completed the total effluent treatment of 1440 m3/day would be required.

  • Plant Required to treat higher flows to the tune of 1440 m3/day in the same plant
  • Inlet COD values fluctuates between 2500-3500 ppm
  • Outlet COD requirement for treated effluent is 80-100 ppm
Major Problems Faced:
  • Shock loads disturbing the process
  • Reduced COD reduction
  • Poor process recovery after the shock load disturbance
The Solution of Oleochemical wastewater treatment

Based upon our initial consideration and after pilot runs were completed at the site, it was decided to convert the existing suspended growth aerobic reactor to a Levapor based IFAS reactor by adding the Levapor media at 15 % filling.  After modification the plant was expected to achieve the total treatment capacity of 1440 m3/day.

THE RESULTS

After successful commissioning and implementation of the Levapor modification, the plant is consistently achieving required treatment goals of their COD levels at the secondary clarifier outlet.

THE BENEFITS

The project offered following benefits to the client.

Achieve higher treatment capacity for the oleochemical wastewater treatment facility using the same existing infrastructure by doing,

  • Minimal modification of existing infrastructure,
  • Remarkable process stability achieving consistent COD at the outlet within 60-180 ppm range as per the client’s requirement,
  • No additional space or civil construction required for further upgrading.
